What Are Dentures?

Dentures are replacement teeth that are made of porcelain and gum-colored acrylic. This restorative dentistry treatment can be used to replace several missing teeth or all of the teeth. Your dentist works closely with top dental labs to ensure that dentures are natural-looking and made of the highest-quality materials. Dentures are ideal for patients who have experienced tooth loss but either cannot afford or are not candidates for dental implants, a more permanent solution to tooth loss. Dentures have several cosmetic and functional benefits, including:

  • Enhance the appearance of the smile
  • Prevent shifting of remaining teeth
  • Support facial structure
  • Improve speech
  • Allow for comfortable eating and drinking
  • Can last more than 10 years
  • Increase a patient’s self-confidence

There are several different types of dentures. The kind that you receive will depend on a number of factors, including how many teeth are missing, your personal preferences, and the dentist’s recommendations. Partial dentures are used for patients who have lost only some of their teeth but are not interested in receiving dental implants or dental bridges. These dentures are held in place by the remaining natural teeth. Full dentures are ideal for patients who have lost all of their natural teeth in either jaw.

The Dentures Procedure

During a consultation, the dentist performs a thorough analysis of your teeth and the structures of the mouth to determine if you are a candidate for dentures. For patients who are receiving partial dentures, the doctor takes an impression of the mouth to be used as a guide for the creation of the denture. During a second appointment, the final denture is placed. Patients who receive full dentures have two options for the procedure: conventional dentures, or immediate dentures. For the conventional dentures procedure, the dentist will extract any remaining teeth during an initial appointment. After the area has healed, patients return to have an impression of the mouth produced. Finally, during a third appointment, the final denture is placed and the smile is completely restored.

During an immediate denture procedure, there is no waiting period between tooth extraction and the placement of the denture—the denture is placed immediately after the removal of all remaining teeth.

The dentists of Mills Dental Group are highly trained in fitting comfortable, natural-looking, affordable dentures that complement your individual facial structure. Properly fitted dentures can not only restore your dental health but also make you look younger, feel more confident, improve your speech, and regain the pleasure of eating the foods you love.
