  • Bleeding—After extractions, your new denture was placed. Keep it in place until you come into the office for your post-op appointment the day after surgery. The pressure of the denture will help control bleeding. Slight bleeding may occur up to 2 days. Avoid activities that could apply a suction action to the blood clot such as smoking or sucking through a straw.
  • Swelling: Expect some swelling. It may take 3-4 days before it reaches a maximum. Bruising may also occur. Immediately after surgery, ice packs should be applied to the outside of the face over the area of surgery. Apply for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first day.
  • Medications—Take all medications as directed. When you feel like its possible, switch over to an over the counter pain reliever like Ibuprofen.
  • Food—After the numbness has gone away, a light diet with plenty of liquids is recommended the first day. Avoid carbonated or hot beverages. Soft foods are recommended. Try to avoid spicy, hard and chewy foods.
  • Rinsing—Do not rinse your mouth the day of extractions. The day after surgery, you can rinse your mouth gently with a glass of warm water mixed with ½ teaspoon of salt. You can do this every 3 – 4 hours a day, especially after meals. Keep your denture in place except when rinsing for the first week.
  • Oral Hygiene—Continue brushing and flossing any remaining teeth.
  • Bone Fragments—During healing, you may notice small bony fragments working their way through the gums. We can easily remove them if they are causing a problem.
